Creatures in a Fantasy Sampler

I love working without a chart and making up the pattern as I go along. This is a bug filled excerpt from a sampler I made years ago in that style. There are moths, butterflies, beetles, ladybugs and caterpillars among the flowers. I especially love the caterpillar, but today I'd use different colors.

This blog is a great idea, and will be lots of fun to participate in, so Thank You Michele!
I think I've finally joined correctly ... we'll see if this post shows up on your blog! I've always had trouble with Blogger, which is why my main blog, Embroiderbee's Primary Hive, is on WordPress. But I think I've finally got a parallel universe started on, Embroiderbee's Primary Hive on Blogger. It will make it easier for me to organize and share my little creatures, which I've wanted to do for a while. I have some creature pics to post, and I'll start with my latest squirrels.
I have variations of these guys in several of my samplers, since I love squirrels. I even had a baby squirrel as a pet when I was a girl.

I'll post more later, as it took me most of my lunch hour to get my Google email and my blogs straightened out. First I'll see if this post actually appears somewhere!

What's up, duck?

Here is one crazy little critter. A pink, green, and gold duck swimming right smack in the middle of a sampler - I haven't come across that often! This is from the charming Susan Rambo sampler. I knew I had to stitch this sampler when I first saw it in Sampler & Antique Needlework Quarterly this year. There are a couple of other animal oddities in this sampler. Stay tuned...

A Curly Tail

Found this print of a sampler, which is Scottish and in further study found to be popular in the early 1900's. This one is dated 1917. I thought this little doggie?? I think it is, was cute and had an interesting tail. Almost reminded me of Abbie,my little chi.

Found out these sampler prints were from a company in Chicago Ill in the early 1900's.

This one I grabbed at a community thrift sale in Cleveland Georgia about 2 weeks ago while in search for some kitchen utensils. I thought it would be interesting to show you the animals in this one.

When I first saw the red and white cow on The Isabella Johnstone Sampler, I began paying more and more attention to the unique, curious, beautiful, and downright odd animals that appear on samplers. I envision this blog as a place we can share close-up pictures of the animals we have stitched on samplers - both reproduction and new. If you would like to join this blog, please leave a comment. Post a close-up picture of each of the charming animals you stitch, and tag the post with your name, the name of the sampler, and the animal category: dog, rabbit, peacock, etc. I would like mermaids to be included as well - if they appear on a sampler. Dig through your stitching, and get posting! I cannot wait to see your "critters!"
